Not-for-profit Long Term Care organization in Nova Scotia. Dykeland Lodge offers a full scope of healthcare for 111 residents. Dykeland Lodge prides itself on responding to the ever-changing holistic health care needs of our residents by providing safe, resident-centered quality nursing care.

NURSING &
HEALTH SERVICES

Dykeland personal care on a 24-hour basis including care given under the supervision of a nurse, administration of medication and assistance with daily living. Other services may include facility-based physicians, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and recreation.

Dykeland Lodge offers shared accommodation with one other resident and some private rooms. Common spaces include dining and living areas, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces available for all residents to enjoy. Services include:

  • Our Health Services team participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care of residents.
  • Participating in the admission of new residents to support residents and their families.
  • In collaboration with the RN, ensures resident Care Plans are reflective of current health status by reviewing care needs daily with staff and overseeing the updating of plans of care.
  • Participates in unit medication reviews as per Care by Design policy (Biannual/ Med Reviews).
  • Monitors and demonstrates ongoing assessment of resident care needs and informs nurse in charge or unit manager of changes in resident level of care needs if nursing assessment warrants same; refers residents to other care providers (OT/PT, dietitian, foot care specialist, chaplain, etc.) as necessary.
  • Prepares information for and participates in team meetings and records minutes of the meeting.
  • Demonstrates evidenced-based decision-making while assessing residents for the possible need for medical/emergency treatment or hospitalization.
  • Acts in a resource capacity for residents, families, staff, and the public.
  • Communicates effectively with nursing staff, other departments, other facilities, and government departments to promote optimum care of residents.
  • Participates in the provision of social and recreational programs for the residents as time allows.

INFECTION CONTROL

Dykeland Lodge has an extremely engaged Infection control team who have worked throughout the Pandemic to keep our residents, employees, and families safe. Works with the Director of Care to support all elements of strong IPAC measure.

Auditing and surveillance of the IPAC program within our community includes the following services:

  • Specialized wound care management for patients in every setting.
  • Coordinate Outbreak Management meetings as required for infectious and non-infectious outbreaks.
  • Provides ongoing review of residents on infection prevention and control precautions.
  • Assesses clinical status and infectious disease diagnosis and determines appropriate infection prevention and control interventions.
  • Acts as a resource to staff in infection prevention and control practices, hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Provides education to LTC staff on infection prevention and control policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Promotes the practice of infection prevention and control through ongoing communication along with a presence on resident care units.
  • Provide infection prevention and control education to residents, visitors, caregivers, and contractor.

RECREATION

The Recreation Department at Dykeland Lodge prides itself on offering a variety of therapeutic leisure opportunities focusing on enhancing a resident’s socialization, mental stimulation, physical ability, and spiritual and emotional well-being. We provide both large and small and one-to-one leisure activities. The Recreation Department will also support residents with their self-directed leisure choices.

Each month we feature a main calendar of leisure events enhanced by numerous individual unit activity calendars. Our goal is to provide a variety of recreation programs to enrich the lives of our residents. Please note the monthly calendar is subject to change. FOOD SERVICES

Not only does food provide sustaining nutrition, but it is also an integral part of our day to day to routine, and a sense of home. The goal of the Foodservice Department is to provide safe meals to all residents that are nutritious, appetizing, and presented in an attractive manner. Our food service staff provides the utmost pride in serving mouthwatering and home-cooked meals daily. All meals are cooked fresh in-house, so your loved one receives only the best.

Menus — To provide variety, we follow a 4-week cycle menu, which changes to take advantage of seasonal favorites and to include various holidays/special occasions. The menu provides residents with as much choice as possible to ensure likes and dislikes are accommodated. Beverages and between-meal snacks are stocked in each unit. The Foodservice team values meeting residents’ needs and encourages feedback from residents, families, and staff.  Families are encouraged to share recipes and special menu ideas with the Food Service department to bring a familiar touch of home and comfort. Dining — Meal service is provided to two main dining rooms and three kitchenettes. Guests/families are encouraged to dine with their loved ones. Visitors are asked to plan and provide at least 1-2 hours’ notice to the Food Service Department to ensure seating is available. Meal tickets may be purchased at the front reception area.

Food Handling Safety

Safety is a top priority at Dykeland. The Food Service Department is inspected biannually to ensure food safety standards are met. All food service staff are required to complete professional food safety training.

Clinical Nutritional Services

Two Registered Dietitians are on staff to assess residents on admission, providing ongoing monitoring and reassessments as needed. Families are encouraged to discuss any concerns or questions regarding your loved one’s nutritional status with either of our registered dietitians.
